To further advance China’s R&D, standard formulation and industrialization of 6G technologies, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has recently approved the license for the use of 6GHz band trial frequencies for the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group. The approval supports the launch of 6G technical trials in selected regions, facilitating technological research, breakthroughs, testing and verification against the typical scenarios and key performance indicators of 6G defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
 
At present, China has completed the first phase of 6G technical trials and accumulated more than 300 key technologies. Efforts are continuously intensified to make breakthroughs in core 6G technologies and research integrated technical solutions. China is comprehensively advancing technological R&D, standard drafting, experimental verification and application cultivation, laying a solid foundation for 6G standardization and industrialization. Meanwhile, forward-looking layout and cultivation of the 6G integrated application industrial ecosystem are underway to foster new fields and tracks for industrial development.
 
It is reported that China’s 6G technical trials are divided into three phases:
 
The Key Technology Trial Phase clarifies the mainstream technical directions of 6G;
 
The Technical Solution Trial Phase develops 6G prototype equipment targeting typical scenarios and performance indicators;
 
The System Networking Trial Phase develops pre-commercial 6G devices and conducts tests on core 6G products.
 
Currently, 6G trials have been launched in three Chinese cities: Nanjing, Xiongan New Area and Nujiang Prefecture of Yunnan Province.
 

1. Nanjing

 
Previously, the nation’s first Pre-6G trial network was put into operation in Nanjing. Integrating innovative 6G technologies into the 5G network, the trial network features high bandwidth, long-distance coverage, low-latency determinacy and endogenous AI integration, with relevant capabilities reaching 10 times that of 5G. The launch of this trial network marks a new stage of 6G development, shifting from key technology verification to system capability validation, and lays an important foundation for future 6G standardization and industrial application.
 
Built with cutting-edge 6G technologies and backward compatible with 5G, the trial network serves as integrated communication infrastructure. It covers the Wireless Valley and surrounding areas, and boasts core 6G capabilities including continuous three-dimensional air-ground coordinated coverage, ultimate connectivity, and integration of communication, sensing, intelligence, computing and control. Demonstrations of typical 6G scenarios such as UAV clusters, low-altitude security, industrial wireless control, and network-connected embodied intelligence have been carried out, systematically verifying the technical advantages and application innovations of 6G.
 

2. Xiongan New Area

 
The General Office of Hebei Provincial People’s Government issued the Action Plan for Accelerating the Construction of Digital Hebei (2023-2027). The plan states that by 2027, a large-scale 6G application demonstration network will be completed in Xiongan New Area, building it into a pilot zone for 6G development in China.
 

3. Nujiang Prefecture, Yunnan Province

 
In January 2025, Purple Mountain Laboratory, in collaboration with China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation, successfully released and completed field tests of the "One Tower, One City" low-altitude communication solution in Nujiang Prefecture, Yunnan. It took the lead in realizing the low-altitude scenario application of 6G cell-free technology, marking a major breakthrough in the industrialization of the "One Tower, One City" low-altitude communication solution.
 
The latest approval of 6G technical trial frequencies will strongly drive the high-quality development of 6G industry in China.
